The Primary Grades of Hardwood Flooring

While it is easy to think that all hardwood flooring is similar, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Every wood has different characteristics that give it its own identity. The following article explains the three primary grades of hardwood flooring so that you can choose one that is right for your upcoming flooring project.

How Are Floor Grades Determined?

To help differentiate between them, the NWFA grades hardwood flooring based on specific features like strength and appearance. Since wood characteristics can vary, some floorboards will not fit the grading standard. However, just because a plank of wood is graded differently does not mean you will sacrifice quality by choosing one over the other. You can still find quality hardwood flooring regardless of its category; it all depends on your personal preference.

Select Grade

Also known as ABC-grade, Select Grade flooring is the most popular type of hardwood flooring available. Unlike the other two categories, Select Grade stands out as having fewer natural flaws or imperfections, with most flooring of this type having the same color. Because of its uniform appearance, Select Grade is often more expensive than other categories. However, this is the perfect option if you want a cohesive yet natural hardwood floor design.

#1 Common

With #1 Common wood flooring, you will see much more color variation than select grade options. The characteristics tend to differ depending on the wood species you choose. However, #1 Common wood flooring will almost always feature more knots, streaks, and other variations that will give your space a slightly more earthy look.

#2 Common

Lastly, #2 Common floors are the most rustic of the three categories and offer the most significant variation. Aside from more contrasting colors, expect to see large knots, mineral streaks, and different board sizes. You can also expect to pay less on most #2 flooring compared to the other two flooring types. If you are looking for a floor with a more natural feel and a lot of personality, this category is worth checking out.
